I had the pleasure of facilitating a Letter Lounge here at Crisis, the national homelessness charity. It was a wonderful event with a good take up by our members. Many of those who attended are either refuges, asylum seekers or had little opportunity to get the quiet time, space and support needed to write a letter to friends or family who they may have been forced apart from by circumstance. Looking in to the room and seeing these people utterly immersed in the experience was an emotional moment but one of great satisfaction. I know that this event was the catalyst for the rekindling of many friendships that had dwindled to an ember due to situations that had led these letter-writers to become Crisis members. We will be hosting Claire and her fantastic initiative again soon.

Back in the summer of 2008 I had the great pleasure of attending a Letter Lounge event outdoors in Regent's Park as part of The Treehouse Gallery. Regent's Park in the summer can be a very busy but highly stimulating and diverse environment to be. However it wasn't often that we actually had a chance that summer to really sit and stop and take a bit of time to share that with others not there, or even write that some of those experiences and responses. It was a brilliantly calm and refreshing space that was created by the Letter Lounge that allowed that to occur, and in a way that encouraged some dedication to the art of writing a letter – not just as the communication of a message, but the gestation of a momentary experience that can go on to be spread to others across the world. It was a beautifully clear and focused idea and session, and allowed for a wide variety of people of different ages and interests to come in for a range of times and interact through letter writing. Knowing there is a time you can join others and set aside a moment to not just write a letter but to create the right space to write that letter in is totally invaluable. I think it could work in a great range of contexts – although I did particularly enjoy the outside in the sunny summer.
